A tale of two questions

One of the reasons why people mis-trust politicians is because of how they answer questions.

They will often answer the question they had hoped to be asked, rather than the question they actually were asked.

This is infuriating for anyone listening as it means the answer is at best, deeply unsatisfying and at worst, a deliberate attempt to manipulate the situation.

The problem is that politicians aren’t the only people who do this. We can all engage in this kind of wishful response to a situation. We respond to how we wish is was, not how it is.

If we’re in a situation and the other party is getting frustrated despite our best efforts, we can ask ourselves: are we answering the question they asked, or the one we wish they had asked?
